Dry Eyes Q & A

What is dry eye syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome happens when your eyes don't make enough tears, or when your eyes don't make sufficient high-quality tears. Your natural tears are composed of three intermixed layers: the lipid layer, water layer, and mucin layer.

Why does dry eye happen?

There are many reasons that a person suffers from dry eyes. A majority of dry eyes are inflammatory in nature and as we age our dry eyes become more symptomatic. Other possible causes include:

  • Erratic blinking

  • Medications like antihistamines, birth control pills, or antidepressants

  • Exposure to a dry climate

  • Exposure to wind

  • Immune system illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis or Sjögren’s syndrome

Knowing the cause of your dry eye syndrome can be helpful in designing an effective treatment plan, so Dr. Oishi will try to isolate your dry eye syndrome trigger whenever possible.

Symptoms that may indicate dry eye syndrome include:

  • Dry eyes

  • Scratchy eyes

  • Itchy eyes

  • Red eyes

  • Burning eyes

  • The feeling that there's something stuck in your eye

  • Blurred vision

Perhaps the strangest symptom of dry eye syndrome is watery eyes. Even though your eyes water a lot, this is a sign that you are not producing good-quality tears.

What is the treatment for dry eye?

The treatment for dry eye syndrome can include:

  • Environment changes like avoiding being outdoors in high wind

  • Artificial tear solutions

  • Moisturizing eye ointment that you use before bed

  • Prescription dry eye drops
